I had the honor of being selected to meet His Royal Highness in 2002 at a Prince’s Trust event. As an artist himself, Prince Charles – now King Charles III – was interested in what medium I was using, and why I chose to paint climbers (my principal subject at the time). I found him to be a warm, intelligent man, softly spoken and kind.

In 2021, The Caldor Fire ignited near South Lake Tahoe. It burned 221,835 acres in the Eldorado National Forest and other areas of the Sierra Nevada. The fire dropped down Echo Summit above our community, and burned both sides of the valley we live in. Our narrow strip of riverside forest was saved by firefighters. Since then, wildfire has been one of the most persistent features of our landscape. I gathered charcoal from the fire, and made drawings with it, as a healing way to process the experience.
